Company Anniversary - Kym Johnston
February is an exciting time for Box Talent, not only is it the month of love, but it’s also the month of celebration! This month we are celebrating our Vice President of Operations, Kym Johnston (left), and her 15 year anniversary with the company!
Q: When did you start working at BTA?
A: I started working at Box Talent February of 2001
Q: How did you wind up working at BTA? (have you always wanted to work in the entertainment industry?)
A: Funny story on how I met David. His sister, Mary, and my brother in law, Matt, worked together. My husband and I just moved to Oklahoma from Okinawa, Japan. I didn’t have any type of network established here and was finding it very difficult to find a job or where to look exactly.
Q: What was the greatest accomplishment you’ve had while working here?
A: I think one of the best things that has come out of working at BTA are the friendships I’ve made with co-workers past and present. We are a small company and we are like a family. I’ve never experienced anything like this before in any other positions I’ve held. I still keep in touch with most of our past team members and some are my dearest friends.
Q: What advice would you give to those wanting to find a career in the music/entertainment industry?
A: My advice to someone who is interested in our industry or any industry…BUILD YOUR NETWORK. Constantly put yourself in situations where you have the opportunity to mix and mingle with peers and those you would like to work with in the future. You can do this through Internships, joining social/networking groups, etc.
Q: Who is your role model?
A: My role model has changed through the years. I would say today, my parents are my role models. They have been with me since day one and have always supported me no matter what. They allowed me to make my mistakes and then helped me learn through them. My dad is the most hardworking person I know and my mom is the strongest person I know. She was first in her family to make the move from South Korea and marry and move to the United States. She learned a brand new language and supported my dad through his military and civilian careers while raising 2 kids and helping her two brothers and one sister make their move to the United States.
Q: What is your spirit animal and why?
A: There is a new phrase that I have been called and I think it fits me perfectly…Tiger Mom…but I think it also is a good reflection of my spirit. I am strong and confident but nurturing when needed.
